What Is Mul Cotton? Fabric Feel, Breathability & Care

Mul cotton is a fine, soft cotton cloth, woven from fine yarn into a relatively open texture with a soft finish. It belongs to the family of cloths sold in India as mulmul and malmal, and it suits dresses built around gathers, tiers and loose, flowing shapes.

You can see it at work in OurDve’s Cordelia collection, an ocean-inspired range where mul cotton appears across dresses and co-ord sets, from a tiered maxi to an embroidered shirt dress. The rest of this guide explains what the cloth is, how it behaves in warm weather and how to look after it.

What Is Mul Cotton Made Of?

In its traditional form, mul cotton is made from cotton yarn alone. The name describes a type of cloth rather than a separate fibre. Indian textile terminology defines mulls as plain cotton cloth of relatively open texture, made from fine yarn and soft finished.

The vocabulary around it can be confusing. Malmal is an Indian term for fine cotton cloth, described as slightly heavier than muslin, while muslin is a broad label for light, open cloths. These terms are closely related, although they do not always describe exactly the same type of cloth.

What Does Mul Cotton Feel Like?

Soft and light are the words that follow this fabric around, and both trace back to its construction: fine yarn, an open texture and a soft finish. It is not a crisp cloth, so it tends to suit softly shaped designs better than sharply tailored ones. Weight, weave and finishing still vary from one mul cotton to the next, so two dresses with the same fabric name can feel different in the hand. Close-up photographs and the listing’s own wording say more than the name does.

Mul Cotton vs Regular Cotton: What’s the Difference?

“Regular cotton” isn’t really a textile category. Cotton is the fibre, and it can be woven into cloths that feel nothing alike. Mul cotton sits at the fine, light, open end of that range.

Poplin, by comparison, is defined by closely set threads that give a smoother, more compact surface with fine ribs across the cloth. A mul cotton skirt gathers and moves, while poplin often suits crisper details such as collars and button plackets. OurDve’s guide to poplin fabric looks at how poplin is used in dresses.

Is Mul Cotton Good for Summer?

Often, though not automatically. One study of plain-woven cotton shirting fabrics found that lightweight, open constructions let more air through than dense ones. Mul cotton’s fine yarn and open texture put it towards the airier side of cotton cloths.

That is a tendency, not a guarantee. How a dress feels in the heat also depends on how densely the particular cloth is woven, whether there are extra layers, and the cut, from sleeve length to the fullness of the skirt. OurDve lists the Stark Dress as a summer piece and describes the Poc Dress as lightweight, but neither listing gives a fabric weight or breathability rating.

Is Mul Cotton See-Through?

Some mul cotton can be. How much light passes through a cloth depends on how finely and closely its threads are set, and fine yarn in an open texture leaves more gaps than a dense weave does. That doesn’t make every mul cotton dress sheer, and a white dress can’t be assumed to be lined or unlined either way.

OurDve’s listings for the Stark and Poc dresses don’t mention a lining, so if opacity matters to you, look closely at the photographs and ask before ordering.

Mul Cotton in OurDve Dresses

Both dresses below come from Cordelia, and its ocean theme shows in the starfish and sea-inspired detailing on each. They use the same cloth in very different ways.

Stark Dress: A Four-Tiered Maxi

OurDve Stark Dress in mint green mul cotton with flowing tiered skirt

The Stark Dress in Mint Green is a V-neck maxi described as crafted from classic mulmul. Four tiers give the skirt its flare, and the dolman sleeves carry starfish and crochet details. French knots trim the neckline, and drawstring tassels sit at the waist.

Much of the shape comes from the tiers rather than from the cloth holding itself up, which is where a soft fabric does its best work.

Poc Dress: An Embroidered Shirt Dress

Poc Dress Mul Cotton - White - OurDve

The Poc Dress in White is listed as an everyday shirt dress, lightweight and full sleeved, with Katha work on the cuffs and hem. The back carries a contrasting panel embroidered with sea-inspired motifs, including starfish, octopus and seaweed.

Where Stark relies on tiers for volume, Poc relies on a shirt-dress cut and embroidery. It shows why the design and finishing matter as much as the fabric name.

How to Care for Mul Cotton Dresses

OurDve lists hand washing or dry cleaning for both the Stark Dress and the Poc Dress. Treat that as guidance for those two dresses, not a rule for all mul cotton, since care depends on the particular cloth and finish. Both dresses also carry handwork (crochet, French knots and tassels on Stark; Katha work and embroidery on Poc), which is another reason to follow the listed instruction closely.

On shrinkage: cotton can shrink, and cotton industry guidance links the amount to how the cloth is constructed and finished and how it is laundered afterwards. A cloth sold as preshrunk has been treated to reduce shrinkage in use, but neither listing says whether that applies. It is safer not to assume a dress will keep its exact size after washing.

Before You Choose

Three lines of a listing do most of the work: the fabric, the care instruction and any mention of lining. Where a listing is silent, as the Stark and Poc pages are on lining and preshrinking, a quick question to the brand settles it.

FAQs

1. Is mul cotton pure cotton?

Traditional mul cotton is made from cotton yarn, but the fabric name alone does not confirm the exact composition of every dress. OurDve lists cotton as the material for both the Stark Dress and Poc Dress. Always check the individual product details for fabric information.

2. Does mul cotton stretch?

Traditional woven mul cotton generally has limited natural stretch compared with knitted fabrics. Its soft drape allows it to fall into gentle folds, but that is different from elasticity. When choosing a mul cotton dress, check the listed fit and measurements rather than assuming the fabric will stretch.

3. Can mul cotton dresses be machine washed?

Care instructions vary depending on the fabric and decorative details. OurDve recommends hand washing or dry cleaning for both the Stark Dress and Poc Dress, so machine washing should not be assumed suitable for these styles. Follow the instructions provided for the individual dress.
